Two women among three naxalites arrested

BHUBANESWAR: Conducting a late night raid on naxal hideouts, the Orissa police arrested three Maoists, including two women, in Chitrakonda area of Malkangiri district early on Tuesday. The arrests followed an hour-long exchange of fire between the police and extremists in the forests close to Karamguda under Poplur gram panchayat bordering Andhra Pradesh.

Although it was said that the security personnel fired around 250 rounds and naxalites fired about 50 rounds at the police, there were no reports of any policemen being injured in the gun battle.

Explosives seized

A large quantity of explosives, electronic detonators, fuse wire and a solar phone were recovered from the possession of the Maoists, police said. The extremists -- Ramesh, Mangamma and Laxmi reportedly spoke Telugu and were carrying literatures in Telugu language. The security forces have been acting tough against the Maoists in recent weeks.

Two naxalites were arrested in Chitrakonda area of the district on the eve of Republic Day. Two more Maoists were arrested on the Republic Day when the police raided a few villages in Kalimela area of Malkangiri on the evening of January 26. The CRPFpersonnel had raided a few villages after one of their colleagues was killed in a claymore blast caused by the Maoists earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, a police team from Andhra Pradesh carried out raids in Rourkela town in Sundargarh district and seized machinery used for manufacturing components of country-made fire arms.
