BHUBANESWAR : Rich tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 59th death anniversary while a few activists chose the occasion to register their protest against globalisation and SEZ policies in the city. The state-level main function was organised in the Orissa Assembly premises with Information and Public Relations Minister Debasish Nayak along with freedom fighters and schoolchildren paying floral tributes to a statue of Gandhiji.
Silent prayer
A silent prayer was organised and police personnel paid salute to the Mahatma to mark the martyrs' day. Vehicles were stopped from lower PMG to State Guest House for a brief period to provide a noise-free ambience to prayer session. Orissa chapter of Sarvodaya International Trust organised an impressive exhibition of paintings by several young artists of the State at Rastriya Kalakendra in Unit III area locality of the city. The exhibition titled `Tribute to Bapuji' attracted a large number of people from different walks of life. Activists of Jibika Banchao Andolan (JBA) sat on a mass hunger strike in front of the Orissa Assembly protesting that the country was increasingly adopting policies of globalisation, which was against Gandhiji's principle. "The need of the hour is to protect the rights of common people and to unite them for a broader struggle to protect our natural resources. The struggle assumes significance as it is the centenary year of his Satyagraha in South Africa," JBA secretary Rabi Behera said. Koraput: The 48th annual convention of Sarvoday Samiti was organised at Koraput today. A discussion on Mahatma Gandhi's life was organised on the premises of Sarvoday Samiti.
