CHENNAI : The region will have five fast breeder power reactors by 2020. The first prototype fast breeder reactor is already under construction at Kalpakkam, director of Reactor Operation and Maintenance, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), P.V.Ramalingam said.

The prototype, being built with an investment of Rs.3,200 crore, would be ready by 2010. Of the other four reactors in the pipeline, two would be housed at the Kalpakkam and two elsewhere, he said. He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on `Research and career opportunities for physicists and chemists', jointly organised by IGCAR and Queen Mary's College. Director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras M.S. Ananth spoke on the `character building' component of education. "I'm afraid we do not know how to communicate and build character," he said.

Extra curricular activities such as cultural festivals helped as much as curricular exercises, in this context, he added.

Professor Ananth also urged students to feel proud about India. He said students could perhaps go abroad for the exposure and experience, but urged them to return. The country was making a mark in areas such as atomic energy, space and defence, he added.

Eugenie Pinto, principal, QMC, said over 700 participants registered for the event.
