College acts after first year students complain of ragging

CHENNAI : The Government Stanley Medical College authorities have suspended 21 nursing students for ragging juniors. The order was passed on Monday night, said dean in-charge, Mustaq Ahmed Khan. The move comes after a complaint against the second year students by 38 male students of the first year.

Ten days ago, these students had joined the three-year diploma course in nursing. The courses are offered to students who have passed class X. Within five days, two students had sought transfer certificates. Their written request cited personal reasons such as an ailing mother and lack of funds to continue. Another boy, hailing from Thanjavur, was given a few days' leave to reconsider his decision to discontinue. It is suspected that these boys were victims of ragging.

The seniors have been suspended until further orders and the quantum of punishment would be decided later, depending on the severity of the cases, Dr. Khan said. In an inquiry instituted following media reports, college authorities found that the new students were asked to shave their moustache and enact postures from adult magazines.

After the government closed nursing schools in other places of the State, many of them were shifted to the schools run by the three medical colleges in the city. They are under the care of a Nursing Superintendent.

The students in Stanley always maintained they had no problems but on Thursday they presented a memorandum to the dean seeking better amenities. At the same time rumours began to be floated about two students missing from the campus. Even as the police demanded an explanation from the college authorities, the matter became public knowledge.
