Nod for distribution of old-age pensions

Staff Reporter

Poll panel decision to benefit over 17,000

VISAKHAPATNAM: The State Election Commission has given its nod for distribution of old-age pensions.

While 20,000 of the 26,000 pensions were distributed by the time the notification was issued, the GVMC had written to the commission on the remaining pensions. The model code of conduct is in force in view of the elections to the GVMC.

Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena told reporters here on Tuesday that following the commission's clearance 17,000 pensions, including an additional 11,000, would be given away.

With regard to works, the commission directed that calling of tenders, finalisation and allotment be stopped.

Mr. Meena said further clarification would be sought on whether maintenance works relating to power supply and drinking water could be taken up.

The Commissioner said ballot papers to be fed into electronic voting machines would be printed by the Printing Commissioner in Hyderabad. After the list of candidates was finalised on February 6, officials would be sent to Hyderabad for the purpose.

However, postal ballots numbering between 8,000 and 9,000 would be printed here and sent to the service voters and those on election duty within the stipulated time.

The issue of setting up more polling stations would be decided after discussions with political parties.

Two-child norm

On the two-child norm, Mr. Meena clarified that if a candidate had a third child born after May 1, 1995, he/she would be disqualified.

There was no disqualification for arrears of taxes. Candidates should file details relating to criminal cases, assets and educational qualifications in an affidavit on Rs.10 non-judicial stamp paper along with the nomination. Additional Commissioner (Finance) K. Bhaskar was present.
