Checks sought on online lottery shops near Mulky

Staff Correspondent

Superintendent of Police promises to take action

MANGALORE: Dalits based in Mulky have urged the district police to verify whether online lottery shops that have come up in the vicinity of the Dalit colony on the fringes of Mulky Town Panchayat have been licensed to operate. They also expressed concern over the ill effects of such shops on people in the area, most of whom are poor.

Raising the issue at the monthly meeting convened by the Police Department to redress grievances of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people here on Tuesday, Isu Kumar, a Dalit from Mulky, said there had been a significant increase in the number of such shops in his area.

Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda, who chaired the meeting, assured him that the department would look into the matter and take action. Lokesh, another member of the community, said that people who migrated to the district were facing problems in obtaining caste certificates from the local revenue authorities. He urged the Superintendent of Police to intervene in the matter.

Stating that one must adhere to formalities prescribed by the Government in this regard, Mr. Dayananda said that he would draw the attention of the Deputy Commissioner to the issue. Anand, convener of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, alleged that a Farangipete-based agricultural cooperative society was not providing loans to Dalits and was insisting that they produce an upper caste guarantor. He said the society was not willing to accept surety from a member of their community.

Mr. Dayananda directed P.S. Harsha, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Puttur sub-division, to inquire into the matter. Dalits from Bajpe complained that upper caste people were hostile to a few Dalit families residing in the area following the registration of a rape case against an upper caste person.

Mr. Dayananda directed Pithambar Heraje, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Panambur sub-division, to provide security to Dalits.
