Expert calls for exploiting coal reserves

Staff Reporter

Seminar seeks technique to convert coal into diesel

CHENNAI : India has to exploit coal that is available in abundance in the country as an alternative to fossil fuels, former Secretary to the Union Petroleum Ministry G. V. Ramakrishna said.

Valedictory session

Addressing the valedictory session of a national seminar on oil economy at the Economics department of D. G. Vaishnav College here last week, he said developing a technique to convert coal into diesel must be the priority to tackle the demand-and-supply gap in the oil economy. Explaining the pricing mechanism behind petroleum products, Mr. Ramakrishna called for simplification and rationalisation of the entire pricing system.

The two-day deliberations endorsed the view that India should identify domestically the oil resources instead of relying beyond limits on import.

Neither the administered pricing system (APM) and import parity mechanism seemed to work well.
