TIRUCHI: Topographical maps produced by the Survey of India will be available to the public in digital format from April 1, B. Nagarajan, Director (Geodetic and Research Branch), Survey of India, has said. The `open series maps' in analog and digital formats will be made available through the Survey of India's website for downloading as part of the initiatives taken under the New Map Policy, he said, delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of a conference on `Vision on Rural Water, Life and Environment for 21st Century,' organised on Monday by the Department of Geology of Bharathidasan University. Previously, access to the maps was subject to several restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Defence. Now, the maps would be available with fewer restrictions except in case of sensitive information.
Once in five years
The Survey of India would bring out the topographical maps once in every five years instead of 25 years. It had started work to bring out maps on a scale of 1:10,000. This would provide real-time data, including complete details of the topography for common applications.
