CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Tuesday sought greater accountability from elected representatives of local bodies, more particularly the party candidates in the Chennai Corporation elections slated for February 18. Speaking at a meeting held by the PMK's Chennai district committees, Dr. Ramadoss said the party nominees who were seeking re-election should frequently meet the electorate and assure them that they would voluntarily quit office in the event of losing the confidence of a majority of the people in the wards. Dr. Ramadoss commended the erstwhile PMK councillors for their performance during their short stint in office. Expressing the hope that all nominees of the PMK and its allies would win, he appealed to the party candidates to improve their performance if they were elected. Dr. Ramadoss asked PMK activists, more particularly those in Chennai, to launch a massive tree-planting campaign. Every party member in Chennai should plant ten saplings. Even as the PMK moved fast along the path of progress, the party had taken adequate care to ensure that it did not deviate from its cardinal principles, he said. Its commitment to ethnic, regional and linguistic affinities was unparalleled. As the PMK's organisational elections would be held shortly, enrolment of members would start from next week. He insisted that his charge with regard to sale of narcotics and arrack near educational institutions was not imaginary, and sought action to curb such activity.
