Swedish ship Gotheborg comes calling
|
CHENNAI:
Visitors to the Marina beachfront witnessed a visual treat on Tuesday as a massive ship sailed towards the shore.
Claimed to be the "world's largest sailing wooden replica", the Swedish vessel Gotheborg is here as part of a 10-day "Sweden Comes to Chennai programme".
Organisers said the ship's visit was a symbol of friendship and its mission was to strengthen relations between Sweden and the countries the ship berthed.
The Gotheborg ship is a full-scale replica of the 18th century wooden vessel of the same name. The Swedish Embassy arranged for a fireworks display on Tuesday evening in the Bay of Bengal to signal the ship's visit to Chennai.
For a little over 30 minutes, fireworks lit up the skyline with the ship illuminated in the foreground.
Initially, beach-goers did not understand what the display was all about. Only later did information spread about the vessel anchored 500 metres from the waterfront. Children enjoyed as the crackers brightened the night sky, but beach-goers felt that the ship could have been illuminated better.
