Seminar on information literacy

CHENNAI: The role of libraries in an information age was critically examined at a seminar on information literacy and higher education, conducted by the University of Madras, here on Monday and Tuesday.

Information professionals from academic, public, industrial, research and corporate and information centres across the country participated. C.R. Karisiddappa of Karnatak University, Dharwad, inaugurated the seminar on Monday morning and defined information literacy as the ability to gather, organise, filter and evaluate information and form valid opinions based on the results. Knowledge, rather than capital or labour, had become the principal productive source, he said.

In India, it was a matter of concern that institutes of higher education failed to produce employable graduates, while economic growth depended on a skilled workforce. Information Literacy would be an important tool for personal empowerment and enable students continue the learning process, he said.

S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, said the skill of information literacy could be incorporated in learners by restructuring the learning process rather than the curriculum.
