Kochi
Having the legendary Zakir Hussain in Kochi city was indeed great. He regaled the audience not just with his mastery of the tabla but also with his words. He minced no words in telling the photographers and the television cameramen who were crowding in front of the stage to leave after the opening piece was played. The audience was happy that the artiste came to their rescue in ensuring that the concert could be enjoyed to the full. Their joy only increased when he pointed out to the organisers that those who came in late should not be allowed to the front for it would distract the artistes. He seemed to have been distracted when the organisers escorted Minister for Culture M.A. Baby to the front seat in the middle of the concert. The concert by flautist Shashank who was accompanied by the tabla maestro and mridangam player Satheesh Kumar turned out to be more of a percussion duet. No complaints as the audience enjoyed every bit of it. Shashank perhaps limited his contribution to small pieces, letting the percussion take on as thaniyavarthanam.
