Hyderabad: Mourning and solemnity marked "Youm-e-Ashoora", the 10th day of Muharram in the city on Tuesday.

The highlight of the day was the "Bibi-ka-Alam" procession taken out on a caparisoned elephant in the old city. Members of the Shia community marched along the procession wailing uncontrollably and flagellating themselves with sharp weapons to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Prophet, in the battle of Karbala in Iraq centuries ago.

The Bibi-ka-Alam, which is believed to contain a holy relic, was taken out in a procession from Dabeerpura around 1 p.m. It wended its way through Kaman Shaikh Faiz, Kotla Alijah, Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Mandi Miralam, Purani Haveli and ended at Masjid-e-Ilahi at Chaderghat at 7 p.m. A large number of devotees from different communities lined all along the procession route and paid their respects.

`Ya Husain'

About 800 "Alams" from different parts of the city were taken out and they merged into the main procession. A camel carrying the "Nishan-e-Mubarak" preceded the Bibi-ka-Alam. Bare-chested youth inflicted wounds on themselves with sharp weapons to cries of "Ya Husain".

Shamat Jah Bahadur, grandson of the 7th Nizam, offered `dhatti' to the Bibi-ka-Alam at Purani Haveli. P.Madhu, MP, MCH commissioner, Sanjay Jaju, Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh were among those who paid their respects. Police had made elaborate arrangements to ensure that the procession passed off peacefully.
