International congress on critical care to focus on euthanasia

Staff Reporter

Over 2,000 specialists to participate

KOCHI: An international congress on critical care will be held for the first time in the city on February 9, 10 and 11. Over 2,000 specialists in critical care from across the country and 50 international experts are expected to gather here to discuss related issues and change protocols in the management of the critically ill through evidence-based medicine.

The congress, organised by the Indian Society of Critical Care, Kochi, would deliberate on topics such as euthanasia in relation to the financial crisis of a family that supports the life of such patients.

Society president Mohan Mathew said euthanasia was legalised in Belgium, Netherlands and France. Seven other countries were trying to legalise euthanasia. The society approached the Supreme Court to allow euthanasia for terminally ill patients, said Dr. Mathew.

The guidelines on the end of life care were expected to come about in a couple of months, he said.
