KOCHI: The Ambalamedu Rasamalinya Nikshepa Virudda Samithi, an action council formed by the residents of Ambalamedu in Vadavukode -Puthencruz grama panchayat, has voiced its protest against the proposed Industrial Hazardous Solid Waste Treatment Plant to be set up at Ambalamedu. The proposed plant, to be established by the Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) on the FACT campus, posed a threat to the residents of the area as well as those living along the banks of the rivers Kadamprayar and Chithrappuzha, said the samithi leaders. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, samithi chairman and Vadavukode- Puthencruz panchayat president K.K. Johny and general convener M.P. Omanakuttan said the panchayat had earlier urged the authorities to set up the plant elsewhere. The panchayat had also urged the Union Government in April, 2005 not to allow the project at Ambalamedu as it would affect the environment and create hardship for the local people. The panchayat had informed the State Pollution Control Board that the public hearing held on April 26, 2005 on the issue was incomplete. All the members who came for the hearing had opposed to the construction of the plant, the panchayat authorities said.
