Inauguration

KOCHI: Union Minister for Defence A.K. Antony will inaugurate the Employees and Pensioners Congress (EPC), an organisation of Government employees, teachers and public sector bank insurance employees and retired employees from the sectors, here on February 4. Reception committee general secretary Kambara Narayanan said at a press conference here on Tuesday that Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi would inaugurate the distribution of the membership.

Fire at Mangalavanam

KOCHI: A major fire was reported at the Mangalavanam bird sanctuary (behind the Kerala High Court) on Tuesday at 5.30 p.m., following which birds and bats flew to safety. The dry grass and shrubs caught fire. Personnel from Fire and Rescue Services, Gandhinagar and Club Road succeeded in bringing the fire under control after over an hour. Another incident of fire was reported from near the Thevara U.P. Bridge. The grass near the big fuel lines and tanks caught fire. The fire brigade from Cochin Port Trust was also pressed into service. Two other such incidents were reported from Vimalavanam and near the Pachalam pump. — Staff Reporter
