MADURAI: The city wore a festive look with colourful banners, hoardings and posters eulogizing M.K. Azhagiri, elder son of Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, who celebrated his 56th birthday on Tuesday. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadres, bureaucrats and industrialists were among others who thronged TVS Nagar, where Mr. Azhagiri's house is located, to greet him. Mr. Karunanidhi and many Ministers were present when Mr. Azhagiri cut a huge cake. DMK functionaries organised functions to distribute welfare assistance to beneficiaries. Sweets were distributed to passengers at Periyar Bus Stand. `Annadhanam' was organised in 72 wards of the Madurai Corporation to mark the occasion. A blood donation camp was also arranged. If the recently held Assembly and local body elections brought Mr. Azhagiri back as power-centre in the party and gave him a chance to nominate candidates of his choice to various constituencies, the victory of S.S. Ghouse Basha in Madurai Central Assembly constituency, where by-poll was conducted following the demise of P.T.R. Palanivel Rajan, paved the way for his `resurrection' to lead the party in the southern districts.
