Hingis in quarterfinals

TOKYO: Martina Hingis overpowered Australian Nicole Pratt 6-1, 7-5 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open.

Second-seeded Hingis, who has won the Tokyo tournament four times (1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002), overcame a shaky second set at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium to win the second round match.

Blake cruises

At Delray Beach, top-seeded James Blake cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow American Robert Kendrick in the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Tuesday.

Gaudio loses

At the Movistar Open in Vina Del Mar, former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio lost to fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 6-2 in round-robin play on Tuesday.

Bad return for Canas

At Zagreb, Fabrice Santoro of France ousted Guillermo Canas in the opening round of the Zagreb Open on Tuesday, spoiling the Argentine's return to the ATP circuit following a 15-month doping suspension.

Santoro rallied to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 over Canas
