THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Technopark-based IBS Software Services Private Limited V.K. Mathews has proposed the development of an `Integrated Transportation Management' system for Thiruvananthapuram. Addressing the annual meeting of Thiruvananthapuram Management Association here on Tuesday, Mr. Mathews said this system should offer the `Virtual Travel Market' (VTM) to the people, enabling them to view the air, road and rail transport schedules and giving them e-access to travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and resorts. An integrated VTM would help customers to create their own travel packages, besides giving the travel suppliers the opportunity to publish their products and services. This system can also connect the customers real-time to air, rail and road reservation systems. Mr. Mathews said that the VTM, by itself, would become a recognised forum for selling transportation services. More importantly, it will help forecast demand and attract private investment into industries such as transportation, tour operation and hotel. He said that the developments that were taking place in Thiruvananthapuram would make the city unliveable in a decade or so, if proper attention was not given to planning its growth. Thiruvananthapuram will surpass cities such as Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkatta in population growth in the next 10 years, putting heavy pressure on the city's infrastructure, according to him. There will be tremendous increase in job opportunities in the city in the near future, with the Information Technology sector alone projected to create one lakh jobs in the next 10 years. Mall culture will boom here with the changing lifestyle of the younger generation, he said.
