Karnataka overcomes TN

NIRMAL (ADILABAD): Karnataka women overcame Tamil Nadu 25-15, 27-25, 15-25, 25-13 in the South Zone senior volleyball championships at the NTR Stadium courts here on Wednesday.

The winner trailed in the opening stages of each game, except in the decider. In the second it was down 11-18 at one stage, but recovered to draw level and take the set too. The opponents were evenly matched in speed and power. The Karnataka attack showed greater prudence in grounding the ball in vacant spaces, created by varying the line and length of the exchanges.

Tamil Nadu showed early enterprise as usual, but sustained the tempo in the third to march ahead. It's blocking showed better resilience as it regrouped better in defence. Karnataka broke free in the decider, taking a 11-5 lead in next to no time, separating itself from its rival steadily to clinch the contest.

AP faced few problems in thrashing Puducherry women 25-4, 25-20, 25-4 in the first match of the competition. Taller players of the home side called the shots, against which the visitors chose to find gaps on the rival turf, since their spiking lacking sting.

The host had its share of flaws; only that the Pondy squad could not quite capitalise on them. Receiving was below par and the AP team fouled up on serve on the odd occasion. Both played without a libero, explaining the tardy defence of either camp.

Earlier, the five-day championship was inaugurated by Adilabad Collector and District Magistrate, R. Subba Rao.

The results:

Women: AP bt Puducherry 25-4, 25-20, 25-8, Karnataka bt Tamil Nadu 25-15, 27-25, 15-25, 25-13. — Special Correspondent
