Praveenraj takes title

Madurai: Top seed A. Praveenraj, a ninth standard student of TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai won the boys' under-14 title in the TNTA State-ranking tennis tournament organised by Madurai Union Club, defeating second seed Anuragh Balasubramanianm of Chennai 7-6, 6-1 in the final at the Club Courts on Wednesday.

Praveenraj, coached by Madurai Union Club Coach Lakshmanan, was in fine form to win the title. In the final, he had a tough time in the first set, as he survived a set point by trailing 6-7 in the tiebreak. But he clinched the set at 9-7. He took the second set easily 6-1.

In the under-12 final, unseeded C. Thulasiram a seventh standard student of Gopal Naidu Higher Secondary School, Peelamedu, Coimbatore, who upset the top seed Jeyanth Jeyaraman of Namakkal in the semifinals, beat second seed Himaysu Sagar of Chennai 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 in the boys' under-12 final.

Praveenraj bt Jeyanth Jeyaraman (Namakkal) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; Anuragh Balasubramaniam bt Himaysu Sagar 6-3, 7-6. Quarterfinals: Himaysu Sagar bt Nirmal Goutham (U.C. Mdu) 6-2, 6-0; Jeyanth Jeyaraman bt Rahul Manoah (CHE) 6-3, 6-2; A. Praveenraj bt C. Thulasiram (CBE) 6-3, 3-6, 6-2; Anuragh Balasubramaniam bt Prateep Roshan (CHE) 6-2, 6-0.

Under-12 (final): C. Thulasiram bt Himaysu Sagar 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Semifinals: C. Thulasiram bt Jeyanth Jeyaraman 6-3, 6-4; Himaysu Sagar bt Nikki K. Poonacha (NLY) 6-3, 7-6.

Le-Chatelier triumphs

Le-Chatelier Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the boys' team title, while Kendriya Vidyalaya `A' won the girls' team title in the Ram Anand Buildess District-level inter-school badminton tournament organised by MDBA at MGR Race Course indoor stadium, Madurai on Tuesday.

The results: Boys (final): Le-Chatelier MHSS bt Kendriya Vidyalaya 2-0 (Jarifin bt Sreeshanth 24-22, 21-16; Yaswanth / Surya Prakaish bt Sreeshanth / Manoj Kumar 21-13, 21-15. Semifinals: Le-Chatelier bt TVS MHSS 2-1; Kendriya Vidyalaya bt Sethupatti HSS 2-1.

Girls (final): Kendriya Vidyalaya bt Nirmala girls HSS 2-0. Sathya 21-18, 21-18; Persis / Merlyn bt Sathya / Sabitha 19-21, 21-18, 21-1. Semifinals: Kendriya Vidyalaya `A' bt Kendriya Vidyalaya `C' 2-0; Nirmala GHSS bt Kendriya Vidyalaya `B' 2-0.

Rockfort posts win

Rockfort Football Club registered a 3-1 victory over Annai Football Club in the Dindigul District Football Association nursery league at N.M.M. HSS ground on Wednesday. Annai scored in the ninth before Sankar (33rd), James Rajan (35th) and Manoj Prabakaran (40th) scored for Rockfort.
