Irfan shocks Shantanu

BANGALORE: Irfan Hussain of Tamil Nadu had a lot to cheer about after a long period on the court. The Tamil Nadu youngster scalped the third-seeded Shantanu Rajput of Delhi in an exciting encounter which lasted little over two hours.

Irfan, who won 6-7(5), 6-0, 7-6(6), entered the boys' under-16 singles quarterfinals of the Polyflex National Series (under-14 and under-16) junior tennis championship at the KIMS courts here on Wednesday.

Sai sizzles

N. Sai Karthik of Andhra Pradesh did well to make the boys' under-14 and under-16 singles quarterfinals. Sai defeated Sharan Patil of Karnataka 7-6(4), 6-3 in the under-14 event and accounted for Chetan Prakash of Andhra Pradesh 7-5, 6-1 in the under-16 section.

In the girls' category, the top-seeded Nova Patel of Gujarat advanced to the last 16 in both the under-14 and under-16 events.
