Police have `vital clues' to jewel robbery

Investigators suspect insiders' role

CHENNAI : Police on Tuesday said they had "some vital clues" in the robbery case in which gold jewellery weighing 6.5 kg were snatched at knifepoint from a trader in the busy T. Nagar area on Monday afternoon.

"Since last evening, we questioned as many as 55 people ... We suspect the handiwork of some insiders who had left the merchant's establishment in the recent past. With the aid of professional criminals, a former employee could have identified the victim and executed the plan," an investigating officer said here on Tuesday.

Based on the information gathered from the complainant and other witnesses from the scene of crime, "we have zeroed in on the suspects with the portraits available with us. It is certain that at least two members of the gang could have closely shadowed the movements of the bullion merchant for the last one-week or more."

Many wholesale traders in Sowcarpet area brought in new jewellery designs from Mumbai and procured orders from leading dealers in the city. For this purpose, they carried samples to the prospective buyers, another police officer said.

A fortnight ago, two people driving their cars in Nungambakkam and T.Nagar area were waylaid by two motor-borne robbers who robbed the victims. "Since the modus operandi was similar to yesterday's crime, we are investigating whether a gang is behind it." Commissioner of Police Letika Saran told reporters that the police hoped "to solve the case soon."
