Cruelties on cattle continue: PeTA

Staff Reporter

Slaughterhouses lack amenities

  • Cattle being killed in groups
  • Calves below six years slaughtered
  • No improvement since last probe

CHENNAI: The cruelties inflicted on cattle continued unabated in the State, said People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), a Mumbai-based animal welfare organisation, here on Tuesday.

Addressing presspersons, N.G. Jayasimha, co-ordinator of campaigns and legal affairs, PeTA, said many slaughterhouses in the State were languishing without proper basic requirements, such as water to clean the waste and blood.

Mr. Jayasimha complained that there was no evidence of any reforms taking place in any of the abattoirs in the State as promised by Council for Leather Export (CLE). Mr Jayasimha said the CLE claimed that the abattoir in Coimbatore would become a model of animal welfare centre for other slaughterhouses and markets in the State.
