THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The newly formed New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI) will focus on workers in the unorganised sector. Inaugurating the delegates' session of NTUI State unit's foundation conference here on Wednesday, NTUI national president Y.V. Chavan pointed out that there are around 37 crore workers in the unorganised sector and called upon Left parties to move a Bill in Parliament seeking an amendment to the Contract Regulation and Abolition Act. An amendment to the Act is necessary to remove the anomalies arising from the Supreme Court decision in the Steel Authority of India case. Through this verdict, the apex court had reversed its earlier decision regularising workers once the contract system is abolished, he said. Mr. Chavan said the NTUI was also committed to bring unaffiliated unions all over the country under one banner with the objective of bringing them to the mainstream trade union movement and to strengthen the voice of unity, democracy and independence.
