Gorakhpur I-G replaced

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: Security forces staged a flag march in troubled Gorakhpur town of eastern Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. After four consecutive days of communal violence and arson that claimed two lives, the situation was officially described as peaceful but there was no relaxation of curfew in the four police station areas of Tewaripur, Rajghat, Kotwali and Gorakhnath. A spokesman of the State Home Department here said other eastern UP towns were incident-free. The Government replaced Inspector-General of Police (Gorakhpur Zone) Vinay Kumar Verma with I-G Meerut Zone, Jagmohan Yadav. As miscreants have been targeting trains, it has been decided to deploy adequate security personnel in all mail and express trains passing through Purvanchal.

State Home Secretary Arun Kumar Sinha said the accused in the killing of two persons had been arrested. In all, 200 people have been arrested for alleged involvement in violence. Mr. Sinha said DGP Bua Singh visited the town on Wednesday and was expected to submit a report to the Government.

The Home Secretary said there was no move so far to release BJP Member of Parliament Yogi Aditya Nath and other leaders arrested by the police.
