THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on Wednesday signed a contract with a Chinese-Indian consortium of companies for the construction of the 60 MW Pallivasal Extension Scheme in Idukki district. The consortium consists of a company called DEC, one of the largest electricity equipment manufacturers in China, and Indian companies ESSAR and CPPL. KSEB's chief engineer V.S. Radhakrishnan and ESSAR's senior vice-president Inder Kapoor signed the document in the presence of Electricity Minister A.K. Balan at a function at the KSEB headquarters here. The extension scheme will involve an investment of Rs.268.01 crore. Pallivasal hydroelectric scheme, built in 1940, has an installed capacity of 37.5 MW of electricity at the moment. With the extension scheme, its installed generation capacity will go up to 97.5 MW. At the contract signing function, Mr. Balan said the LDF Government had set a target of adding 500 MW to the installed power generation capacity in the State during its five-year term in office. The KSEB has drawn up a programme for setting up 33 small and medium hydroelectric schemes during this period. Pallivasal extension scheme would be commissioned in 48 months, he said.
