Award for AP Science Akademi

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Prize at the recent 94th Indian Science Congress for its outstanding performance for the cause of science in the State. Two Maoists killed in encounter

KHAMMAM: Two woman activists of the CPI(Maoist) were killed in an encounter with the police in the Perur forests close to the inter-state border with Chhattisgarh on Wednesday evening.

The police recovered two weapons- one SLR and a 303 rifle on the spot. Ten other members of the Maoist dalam managed to escape. . — Staff Reporter

Farmers obstruct Hundri canal works

KURNOOL: Farmers obstructed the Hundri-Neeva canal works at Krishnagiri in Kurnool district on Wednesday. A group of workers objected to continuing of works on the ground that they did not receive compensation for the lands they had surrendered. They asked the contractor to restart the work only after the payment of compensation.— Special Correspondent

Two kids drowned

VISAKHAPATNAM: Two children were drowned in the Gosthani river at Tagarapuvalasa near here on Wednesday.

N. Sridevi (9) and U. Sanyasamma (7), students of Class V and III respectively, went to the river along with four friends. Sridevi and Sanyasamma found a big thermocole sheet on the bank and used it to go for a ride. After going some distance, the sheet sank and they drowned in the water. — Staff Reporter

Woman burnt alive

in fire accident

Srikakulam: A 70-year-old woman, K.Akkamma, was burnt alive and 60 houses, mostly thatched ones, were razed to the ground in a fire accident in Savaraddavalasa village in Saravakota mandal, some 40 km from here on Wednesday. The estimated loss in the form of paddy and cash was put at Rs.50 lakhs. According to locals, the deceased woman reportedly threw a cigar without stubbing it out resulting in the fire accident..— Special Correspondent

TDP to contest

ZP chief post

VIZIANAGARAM: The Telugu Desam Party has decided to contest for the Zilla Parishad chairperson's post. This was disclosed at a press conference here on Wednesday by party district ad-hoc committee convenor Yadla Ramana Murty.

He said as per the directive of the State committee, the party that has 10 ZPTCs, including one independent, would field a candidate.— Correspondent

CPI leader

K. Subbanna dead

KADAPA: Veteran Communist Party of India leader K. Subbanna (74) died at his residence at Alamkhanpalle in Kadapa city on Wednesday afternoon.

The veteran leader's body would be placed at the CPI office here from 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. on Thursday. CPI State secretariat member K. Ramakrishna would attend Subbanna's cremation.
