Book on communicating science

What constitutes science communication? Is it disseminating information on science and technology? Or, is it creating an atmosphere and opening channels through which the individual gets a better and fuller understanding of the world around him or her?

`Science Communication,' a book on communicating science, edited by A.A. Aravindakshan, Dean of Humanities, Cochin University of Science and Technology, addresses the question squarely.

Meant as an introduction to the art of science communication, the book deals with a number of areas in science communication. As part of mass communication and general science education, science communication needs to be seen as an effort to unravel the world of science to the common man. This sub-field of mass communication is a complex one involving specialised and focussed knowledge.

Besides the ability to communicate simply and lucidly, a science communicator should have the acumen to delve into the world of science.

On the media front, there has been an explosion of ideas. The print and electronic media are constantly on the lookout for new developments even as the world of science makes rapid strides. The job of the science communicator is to make the best use of both the worlds and to act as a bridge.

The book has been brought out by the Directorate of Public Relations and Publications of the University and it comprises 16 articles that deal with topics as varied as Science Communication for Children to the Relevance of Science Communication in India. Media and the changes in technology, intellectual property protection, creative writing and writing for radio and television are key areas presented in the book.
