THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The purpose of education should be to equip students to face the challenges of life with confidence, Governor R.L. Bhatia has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee celebration of St. Antony's Higher Secondary School at Valiathura on Wednesday.

Devotion and dedication should be the watchword of anyone dealing with knowledge, Mr. Bhatia said referring to the commitment shown by the rulers of erstwhile Travancore and Christian missionaries in promoting education in the State.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu who presided over the function said education was accorded the status of worship by the Christian missionaries in schools. Mr. Jayan Babu urged the students to become broadminded and look at society as a whole instead of focusing on one's own personal welfare and hygiene. "While individual welfare is important. We should also strive to keep our city and schools clean," the mayor said.

Archbishop of Latin Catholic Diocese M. Susaipakiam urged the students to nurture the habit of helping people in distressful situations. He narrated a parable to the students about a disciple who under the guidance of his teacher turned into a man of compassion to drive home the message.

As part of the celebrations, various cultural, literary and social service programmes would be organised throughout the year at the school.

According to the school authorities, St. Antony's HSS established in 1957 was the first educational institution in the coastal area of the city to complete 50 years. The function was also attended by Silu George, Principal, and Tony Oliver, president, Parent Teacher Association.
