S-I held for graft

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police sub-inspector posted with the Anti-Extortion and Robbery Cell of the Crime Branch was caught by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday while allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs. 1.5 lakhs from a businessman. The CBI has also launched a manhunt for an Assistant Commissioner of Police at whose instance the sub-inspector was allegedly receiving the illegal gratification.

A Delhi businessman recently lodged a complaint with the CBI alleging that he was being harassed by ACP (Anti-Extortion and Robbery Cell) R.K. Bansal and his subordinate, Sub-Inspector Jagdish. He alleged that the police officers were demanding Rs. 15 lakhs to ignore a complaint lodged against him by one of his business associates. He also alleged that the officers conducted an "illegal" raid at his residence on January 20 and took away cash and jewellery worth Rs. 30 lakhs. Then the police officers scaled down the bribe amount to Rs. 5 lakhs.

The CBI registered a case against Dr. Bansal and Jagdish. On Wednesday when S-I Jagdish came to receive the first instalment of Rs. 1.5 lakhs, the CBI arrested him. During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he had come to receive the bribe at the instance of Dr. Bansal. Subsequently, the CBI mounted raids at Dr. Bansal's and Jagdish's houses and offices.

Two bodies recovered

NEW DELHI: The bodies of two young men have been recovered from a canal in Sarita Vihar here. The bodies, identified as that of Pawan (21) and Sunil (17), were found on Wednesday.

The two had been missing since Sunday. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

Power cuts

NEW DELHI: Angry residents of South Extension Part-I here on Wednesday complained of frequent power cuts in the area for the past two weeks. The Residents' Welfare Association said the residents have had to endure power cuts lasting over an hour every morning and evening.

"BSES officials told us that there will be no relief for us for the next 15 days. If the supply of power is so bad in winters, we dread to think what summers will bring," said RWA president M. S. Chug.

Acknowledging that many parts of the city were facing power cuts, a BSES official said: "We are unable to help because there is under-frequency in Northern Grid. Other States like Punjab and U.P. are continuously over-drawing from the Grid and Delhi is bearing the brunt of it."

The system trips to save itself from collapsing whenever the frequency falls below a certain level, he added.

Kirtan planned

NEW DELHI: The three-day 14th Sant Samagam and Mahan Kirtan Darbar in memory of Mahant Gurmukh Singh will be held at Gurdwara Tikana Sahib in Punjabi Bagh here from February 6. Thousands of devotees from Delhi and neighbouring States are expected to attend.

Besides "Shabad Kirtan" recitals, a "Guru Ka Langar" will also be organised for the devotees.
