HYDERABAD: A division bench of the High Court on Wednesday declined to set aside the orders of the State Government seeking merger of the local bodies surrounding the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad to form Greater Hyderabad. The bench granted a limited relief to the petitioners permitting them to file objections before the Government. The bench was closing batch of writ petitions filed by Asaduddin Owaisi and others. The State Government had issued notices to 12 municipalities and 8 gram panchayats around Hyderabad asking them as to why they should not be abolished to merge them into proposed Greater Hyderabad. These orders of the State Government were challenged on various grounds. The main contention was that the area would be so large that it could be unviable for the status of a local body. It was further contended that the gram panchayats and municipalities would lose their identity defeating the very special local self-rule.
