TIRUCHI : Several parts of the city have gone without drinking water supply for the second consecutive day on Wednesday following a leak in the distribution mains of the Kambarasampettai Main Pumping Station. Corporation officials who worked throughout the day to repair the pipeline said water supply would resume on Thursday. The pipeline had suffered major erosion, off the Karur Highway, causing leak. The leakage could be pinpointed only by 4 a.m. on Wednesday as the pipeline runs nearly 18 to 20 feet below the ground. A huge pit had to be dug to repair the pipeline. But workers encountered slippery ground, with mud sliding down repeatedly. An earthmover got stuck, slowing down the work. The Main Pumping Station caters to a major part of the city and accounts for nearly 23 out of total of 89 million litres a day (MLD) supplied to the city. The leakage had disrupted the entire drinking water supply to the city since Monday evening as the pumping systems of different water schemes were interconnected. City Engineer (in-charge) Raja Mohammed and Executive Engineer R. Chandran said that the pipeline would be cut and replaced for a stretch of about 15 feet.
