dated February 2, 1957: Role of universities

Prime Minister Nehru laid the foundation-stone of the centenary building of the Madras University on January 31 at a special pandal erected between the Senate House and the university building. The function was preceded by a special convocation at which the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on Mr. Nehru. Addressing the gathering present on the occasion, the Prime Minister declared that it was for the university to give a lead to our thinking and to irrigate the minds of the people, so that they might come out and take part in the adventure of building a new India. Telling the younger generation that the privilege of working for that new India would be theirs, Mr. Nehru said: "I want you to have the feeling of partnership in the tremendous undertaking, in the great adventure, and that glow and enthusiasm and exhilaration for working for that great cause." The Prime Minister, wearing the academic robes for the occasion, came in a procession, accompanied by the Chancellor, Mr. A. J. John, Mr. Justice P.V. Rajamannar, President of the Centenary Celebrations Committee, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, and Mr. C. Subramaniam, Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor.
