This Day That Age
The visiting Soviet Defence Minister, Marshal Zhukov, paid an unexpected visit to the historic Shanwar Wada fortress on January 31. Over 5,000 people had gathered at the fortress to give the Russian military hero a great welcome. Marshal Zhukov was accompanied by Major-General Habibullah, Commandant of the National Defence Academy. According to historical belief, one of the Peshwas had built the fortress when he saw a hare chasing a dog at the place. Later this fortress was the seat of the Maratha kingdom during the Peshwa regime. Addressing the gathering at the fortress, the Soviet Defence Minister said both India and Russia stood for peace. He said he had been in the army for 42 years, during which time he saw four wars, and realised from personal experience what misery, death and destruction they meant.
