Hoax call: 4 months RI for youth

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A city court has awarded four months' rigorous imprisonment to Perinbarajan (21) for making a hoax call claiming that a bomb had been planted in the President of India's aircraft.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visited Chennai on September 4, 2006 and was to return to New Delhi in the night. The police control room received the call at 10.35 p.m. The caller claimed to have planted a bomb in the "Governor's" flight (though the President of India was about to depart). The cyber crime police registered a case, tracked down the youth and picked him up on September 6. The accused worked in a private jewellery showroom on Usman Road in T.Nagar and hailed from the Nilgiris district.

Based on his confession, he was remanded to judicial custody. On September 19, 2006, the police filed the charge sheet in the Egmore Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M.P. Jagannathan, who heard the case, found Perinbarajan guilty and ordered him to undergo four months' rigorous imprisonment on Wednesday. Commissioner of Police Letika Saran has warned that severe action will be taken against persons making such threat calls.
