India global leader in telecom: Reliance official

Staff Reporter

A customer is being added every second

CHENNAI: Indian players are leading the telecom sector with a customer being added every second, said G. Somasekhar, chief executive officer, Reliance Infocomm (Tamilnadu & Kerala), on Wednesday here.

"We are the global leaders. For three months in a row, we had the highest number of customer additions, much more than China," he said in his talk on `Global Leadership' organised by the Madras Management Association.

The rate of growth was evident from the teledensity numbers, with more than six million subscribers added in the months of November and December 2006 alone.

Much of this growth, said Mr. Somasekhar said, was in the field of mobile telephony. Fixed landline had become a means for having proof of address or getting a broadband Internet connection, he said.

The sector, according to him, was able to achieve its current subscriber base (17 per cent of the total population) in such a short time was because of low tariffs, inventive packages brought out by competing players, passive infrastructure sharing among mobile service providers and convergence of technology.
