Delhi honours a martyr on Martyr's Day

Staff Reporter

Major Rathore attained martyrdom while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir

NEW DELHI: The E-Block Park at New Rajendra Nagar in Central Delhi has been named Shaheed Major Gopi Singh Rathore Park.

Major Rathore, who attained martyrdom on November 10, 2005, while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, was Aide de Camp (ADC) to former President K. R. Narayanan.

Ironically, the young Army officer, who was awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously, fell to the bullets of terrorists very soon after Mr. Narayanan's demise, just as the funeral pyre of the former President was being lit.

Major Rathore's parents -- Kripanti Devi and L. Rathore -- local municipal councillor Manjit Khanna and the local Assistant Commissioner of Police and several area residents were present at the function in the park held on Tuesday.
