Kamat takes charge as HMT chairman

Bangalore: A.V. Kamat has taken over as chairman and managing director of HMT Ltd., succeeding M.S. Zahed who has retired.

Mr. Kamat was earlier managing director.

Mr. Kamat joined HMT in 1975 as an engineer trainee and held key positions in the machine tools division. He is a graduate from IIT-Mumbai. — Special Correspondent

`No plan on

medical college'

BANGALORE: Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya told the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that there was no proposal before the Government to open a medical college in Uttara Kannada district.

Out of 27 districts, seven did not have government or private medical colleges, and they included Chamarajanagar, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Kodagu, Gadag, Koppal and Chikmagalur, Dr. Acharya said. — Special Correspondent

Mudhol observes bandh

BIJAPUR: Mudhol town in Bagalkot district on Thursday observed a bandh in protest against the desecration of over 20 "Shivalingas" set up on the "gadduges" in the graveyard there.

Schools, colleges and business establishments remained closed. Hundreds of protesters took part in a procession and submitted a memorandum to tahsildar seeking the immediate arrest of the culprits. — Staff Correspondent

Award for HPCL

MANGALORE: The State chapter of the National Safety Council has conferred the "Suraksha Puraskara" on the Mangalore LPG Import Facility (MLIF) of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited for 2003-2005, according to a release.

The award was received by Shailesh R. Rao, chief manager of MLIF from H. Srinivasaiah, State Director of Factories and Boilers, in Bangalore recently. A. K. Saxena, managing director, HAL, Bangalore, and A.S. Lakshmanan, chairman, National Safety Council, Karnataka chapter, were present at the award presentation function, the release added. — Staff Correspondent
