CBI man held on cheating charge

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested one of its sub-inspectors and an alleged accomplice of his on charges of cheating people on the pretext of providing them lucrative jobs abroad. As many as 150 passports and air tickets were seized during raids on their premises. A hunt has been launched for other members of the gang.

The human trafficking racket involving an officer of the country's premier investigating agency was unearthed after one of the victims approached the CBI and lodged a complaint.

According to the complaint, the victim and the CBI sub-inspector, Leelu Ram, belong to the same village. Sub-Inspector Leelu allegedly offered the victim a good job abroad. Lured by the offer, the victim agreed to pay "commission" for the work.

Subsequently S-I Leelu along with his accomplices Shyam Mohan and V. P. Arora, who run a travel agency at Moti Nagar in West Delhi, and Rakesh Sharma, allegedly arranged travel documents for the complainant and sent him to Indonesia and Thailand. The other members of the gang operating from those places impounded the victim's passport to prevent his escape and they kept taking him to different places. In due course, he met several others who were cheated in the same manner.

After the victim returned to India, he contacted the accused to get his money back but they allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI registered a case under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Subsequently the sub-inspector and his accomplice Shyam Mohan were arrested on Tuesday.
