Tension in Sikar after man dies in hospital

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The district town of Sikar in the Shekhawati region witnessed tension on Thursday following the death of a man in the local Government hospital on Wednesday night allegedly after not getting timely medical attention. Hundreds of persons, including Amra Ram, MLA of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), sat on a daylong dharna in the hospital premises refusing to lift the body of Deepa Ram.

The agitators were demanding suspension of the hospital authorities responsible for negligence in treating Deepa, a resident of village Theth in Datta Ramgarh tehsil, as well as the police personnel who ordered use of force against the protesting relatives. Tension gripped the town as CPI (M) workers and students from Shri Kalyan Collegestarted congregating at the hospital. A large number of police personnel remained deployed in the town till the body was finally lifted in the evening after talks.

The 65-year-old Deepa Ram was said to be suffering from asthma. He was brought to the hospital late on Wednesday night. He died reportedly around 1 a.m. and the doctors allegedly arrived only after his death.

Sikar SP Ashwani Vashishth, speaking on phone said the police used only "mild force" to push out the relatives of the deceased who were "terrorising" the medical staff .He denied a lathi charge by the police. The agitating group lifted the body after the authorities agreed to hold two different enquiries -- into the alleged lapses of the hospital staff and the excesses by the police -- by the respective departments.
