CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S.F. Rodrigues on Thursday visited the proposed site for a modern terminal market for agriculture produce in Sector 39 here and discussed with senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration the broader framework and road map for creation of a physical and supportive infrastructures. A lifeline for the farming community of the region, this project would provide market services such as electronic auction facility, cold storage, temperature-controlled warehouses, ripening chambers, sorting, grading, washing and packing lines, material handling equipment, banking services including settlement of transaction and non-market services related to agriculture such as business centre services, budget hotels and motels, restaurants and shopping complex. General Rodrigues said that Chandigarh had been selected by the Union Ministry of Agriculture to be one of the modern terminal markets being set up in different parts of the country.

He directed the Deputy Commissioner, Chief Engineer and Chief Architect to put in place an institutional mechanism for coordinating the different agencies involved in execution of the project. He also visited the housing project coming up in Sector 48 for the doctors and other para-medical staff of the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 and asked the Engineering Department to complete it in a time-bound manner.
