New cement plant to come up in Himachal

  • `The proposed plant would cost Rs.800 crore'

    SHIMLA: Jai Prakash industries, which is already involved in making some hydel projects in Himachal Pradesh, signed a memorandum of understanding with the State Government on Thursday for setting up a 2 million tonnes capacity cement plant based on Baroh-Sindh limestone deposits in Churah tehsil of Chamba district. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Industries Minister Kuldeep Kumar.

    The Chief Minister said the proposed plant would cost Rs.800 crore and provide direct employment to over 1,000 people and indirect employment to over 5,000. He said the new Industrial Policy of the State would be applicable to the cement plants being set up in Himachal and 70 per cent employment at all level to local people would be mandatory. He said the company would arrange for employment to one member of each of the displaced families as per their qualification during the construction period immediately and subsequently on a regular basis when the unit begins production.

    Mr. Virbhadra Singh said the company would also be required to spend 1.5 per cent of the final cost of the project towards Local Area Development besides giving attractive relief and rehabilitation package to the oustees and would also associate themselves with welfare and social activities in the area. The company would also undertake widening of the road besides constructing the approach road to the site of the project at its own cost.
