Focus on increasing crop productivity in Haryana

Special Correspondent

State Government to adopt a multi-pronged strategy

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has decided to concentrate on increasing the per hectare crop productivity over 38 lakh hectares of land available in the State for cultivation, Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha told media persons here on Thursday.

A multi-pronged strategy would be adopted. The vertical crop productivity would be increased and the gap between current yield and potential productivity would be filled by providing quality inputs like seeds, fertilizers and modern agricultural appliances to farmers. This would ensure better prices to the farmers to increase their net income and restore their faith in tiding over the crisis besetting the agricultural sector.

Mr. Chatha said a campaign would be launched from Rajlugarhi in Sonepat district on Feburary 3 for doubling sugarcane production.

Farmers

He said that thanks to the awareness drive launched by the State Agriculture Department, the farmers were now delaying paddy sowing and going for early sowing of wheat. Sowing of summer paddy "Saathi'' which was adversely affecting the water table had already been abandoned by most of the farmers.

He disclosed that commodity-based hubs were being set up at Kurukshetra for potato, Karnal for tomato, Jhajjar for onion, Sonipat for mushroom and Sirsa for kinnow.

Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary Asha Sharma spoke about the future vision of the Government vis-a-vis the agriculture sector.
