Uniform funds for all academies sought

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Government should allocate a uniform sum of Rs. 30 lakh year to all the academies of the State from the next budget, Karnataka Madhyama Academy President V.N. Subba Rao has said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Rao said that the present allocation of Rs. 15 lakh to the academy was not only inadequate, but also Rs. 5 lakh less than what was given to other academies.

The Karnataka Madhyama Academy turned 25 this year and year-long programmes had been planned to mark the occasion. It would be holding 10 special workshops for rural reporters in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj. It would also honour senior journalists as part of the year-long celebrations, he said.

Mr. Rao said that applications had been invited for awards to 15 young journalists for 2006 under different categories. Applications, along with newspaper reports or video clippings, should be submitted to the academy office in Visvesvaraya towers before February 15. The academy had set up a committee to select 15 senior journalists for lifetime achievement awards. The names would be announced at the academy meeting on February 28, he said.
