Another Congress worker shot dead in Assam

Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI: Suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) gunned down a Congress worker in upper Assam's Golaghat district on Thursday. Abdul Bashar (53) was on his way to Kacharipam near Deargaon town.

A large number of Congress workers in upper Assam have resigned from the party in the wake of the ULFA's recent attacks on party workers despite an appeal issued by PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita urging them not to panic.

Assam Government spokesman and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said security forces intensified operations to check the movement of ULFA militants who, he said, had made the party workers at the lowest rung soft targets.
