Seven held on charges of pilferage

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Airport police, on Thursday, arrested seven persons working for a baggage handling company on charges of pilferage.

When the baggage arrived at the Customs Clearance area, these workers used to remove the valuables from the bags, the police said.

The seized valuables valued at Rs.5 lakh, included jewellery weighing 12 sovereigns, a laptop, four video cameras, 24 wristwatches, 10 cellular phones, two digital cameras, two calculators and a palmtop.

This came to light when a similar incident occurred about a fortnight ago when the police arrested two persons. Interrogations led to the seizure of the stolen valuables.

The arrested were identified as A. Solomon (25) J. Kamaraj (36) and V. Vijay Ganesh (24) of Alandur, J. Gnanakumar (25) of St. Thomas Mount, C. Venkatesan (30) of Meenambakkam, A. Muthuraj (28) of Valasaravakkam and N. Iyappan (37) of Guduvanchery.

The arrested were remanded to custody.
