This Day That Age
The need for the Madras City Corporation providing a first class theatre for the benefit of its citizens was stressed by Mr. P. Sambanda Mudaliar, noted Tamil dramatist, replying to a civic address presented by the Corporation at the Stadium Grounds on February 1. Mr. K.N. Srinivasan, Mayor, presenting the address in a silver casket, said Mr. Sambanda Mudaliar was the "father of Tamil drama" and the City Corporation was proud to honour him on his 85th birthday. Mr. Sambanda Mudaliar started the Suguna Vilasa Sabha in 1891 and leaders such as Mr. Satyamurthi, Sir R.K. Shanmugam Chetti and Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar had participated and acted in dramas staged under the auspices of the Sabha. He had translated into Tamil all the important plays of Shakespeare and had written a treatise on the Tamil stage. Mr. Sambanda Mudaliar thanked the Corporation for honouring him. Mr. M.G. Ramachandran, speaking on behalf of the South Indian Artistes Association, paid tributes to Mr. Sambanda Mudaliar for his services to Tamil language, drama and literature.
