Women SHGs take up gas distribution in Anantapur

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: After initiating the women of self-help groups (SHGs) into disbursement of welfare pensions, the district administration has involved them in the distribution of cooking gas now, another first in the State.

`Vennela Mandala Samakhya' was accorded the responsibility of distributing LPG cylinders to the consumers of HP gas dealer Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Corporation in the district headquarters town on Friday on an experimental basis. The opportunity has been given for two months initially and it would be extended till March-end next year if the women are successful, Joint Collector Anita Rajendra said handing over the task.

She asked the women's groups not to belie the confidence shown in them by the district administration, as the task would place the women on a par with men in another field managed by "men only" so far. It was on the shoulders of women now to disprove the belief that works like gas distribution can be done only by men. She asked the women to take up gas delivery as a challenge. President of the samakhya Mary said that the women groups had been successfully disbursing the welfare pensions to the elderly, widows, physically handicapped and weavers for the last three months in 40 mandals. She vowed to complete the present task given to them with confidence. Later, the Joint Collector distributed identity cards to SHGs and auto drivers. N. Ramachandra Reddy, Project Director of IKP/DRDA, District Manager of Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Corporation V.S.R. Murthy, District Supply Officer Sambasiva Reddy also asked the women to prove their mettle in the given task.
