New initiative in Sri Lanka?

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Amid speculation of a possible "new initiative" for cessation of hostilities, Ambassador of Norway Hans Brattskar on Thursday travelled to the LTTE headquarters in Kilinochchi.

According to diplomatic sources, it was a routine visit. But it is the first direct contact between Norway and the Tigers after the unsuccessful visit of visiting Norwegian Special Envoy Jon Hanssen-Bauer in December last year.

After an abortive attempt on the life of Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa on December 1, the Government told Mr. Brattskar that his visit would not have its approval as it was reviewing its "relations" with the LTTE.

Low profile

After the Government amended the terrorism law, the envoy was permitted to visit the LTTE administrative headquarters which did not produce any result.

He left Colombo a disappointed man and reportedly told those who matter that Oslo would keep a low profile for the next few weeks before considering any steps towards another round of mediation.

For all the pretensions, relations between the Government and Norway are not good. The Government considers Norway "pro-LTTE" despite the overwhelming backing it has in its mediation efforts from the whole international community.

The Ambassador met LTTE political chief S.P. Thamilchelvan.
